It is with great pleasure that I announce the opening of the San Diego Institute for Pancreato-Biliary Disease serving patients from San Diego and surrounding counties and northern Mexico. We have so far completed hundreds of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies, most of them were therapeutic in nature. Our success rate approaches 94% in our series.
Because of our conservative approach, our complication rate has remained very low, rivaling the national average. In the above series we have experienced four cases of ERCP induced pancreatitis, three of which required hospital admission; the longest hospital stay was thirteen days. We have not experienced a single case of cholangitis, perforation or uncontrolled post sphincterotomy bleeding to date. The most common indications for ERCP was for clearance of ductal stones, placement of biliary stents for malignant ductal strictures and for management of carcinoma of the head of the pancreas. We have seen a strikingly high number of patients with recurrent pyogenic cholangitis, the majority of which are either Asian or Latin in origin. We have also seen a mixture of pathology including patients with stones in BillRoth II or Roux-en-y situations.
Patients may be referred to our facility directly, or if you wish to discuss the patients directly with me I will be happy to do so. We are very excited about the project and looking forward to working with you in the future.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Iman I. Mikhail, M.D.
